F3 Australia Practice: Tuukka Taponen with work to do heading into Qualifying
The first of ten Formula 3 rounds begins in Australia, with an impressive Tuukka Taponen representing the Ferrari Driver Academy in practice.
With a red flag ending the session, Ugo Ugochukwu took pole position in Formula 3 Australia practice in Melbourne. While this doesn’t officially mean anything yet, it gives Ugochukwu a great foundation to build on heading into qualifying. Tuukka Taponen claimed 13th in the busy Formula 3 practice session, which isn’t a great start to his first race weekend of the 2026 F3 season. The Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy representative did okay compared to his MP Motorsport teammates, with Mattia Colnaghi sitting 15th in the practice standings, with Alessandro Giusti finishing the session in an impressive 5th.

Tuukka Taponen Needs To Find Pace In Australia
Tuukka Taponen has a big season ahead of him, with the Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy representative yet to secure a win at Formula 3 level. While the first practice session of the season isn’t the most important session in the world, it was a fantastic chance to see how competitive Taponen will be before qualifying starts in Australia. The Finnish driver didn’t get the cleanest of runs during his push laps, however, he doesn’t seem as competitive as his rivals. It’s obviously early days, but Taponen’s practice pace was nowhere near the leaders, and I expected him to at least be the fastest MP Motorsport driver, which didn’t happen. Tuukka can turn this around in qualifying, but the Finn will need to find about a second to be remotely threatening the front row. At this point, I think if Taponen can secure a top ten spot in qualifying, it will be a decent start to the opening race weekend of the 2026 Formula 3 season.
