F3 Australia: Tuukka Taponen’s Melbourne woes continue in messy Feature Race

In the first Formula 3 feature race of the 2026 season, it was Ugo Ugochukwu who walked away victorious. Freddie Slater and Taito Kato had to settle for a podium position, with Slater coming 2nd and Kato finishing 3rd. However, my focus was on Tuukka Taponen’s race, with the Finnish driver having a difficult time in Melbourne, with a poor qualifying and lackluster sprint race leaving much to be desired. The Ferrari Driver Academy prospect wasn’t much better in the feature race, however, Taponen recovered from his poor start to the race by reclaiming some lost positions when finishing 13th in Australia.

• Key Highlight: Once again, Taponen stayed out of trouble, with no incidents throughout the race.

Mattia Colnaghi Gets The Better Of Tuukka Taponen In Melbourne Feature Race

Tuukka Taponen started the F3 Australia Feature Race in 12th, but the Finnish driver had a poor start to the race. For whatever reason, Taponen didn’t have the pace during the opening laps, with the Ferrari Academy driver dropping as low as 16th in the standings. However, Taponen eventually worked his way back up the grid, finishing 13th in the first feature race of the 2026 season. However, compared to his MP Motorsport teammates Mattia Colnaghi and Alessandro Giusti, the Finn could have done better. Colnaghi was never in danger of being caught by Taponen, with the Red Bull-backed driver finishing the Melbourne Feature Race in 10th. Giusti didn’t have a great race, and despite Taponen’s struggles this weekend, he managed to finish ahead of his fellow MP Motorsport driver who crossed the line in 15th. Although Tuukka didn’t score points this weekend, he still has plenty of time in the season to put this result right. But he needs to improve his qualifying pace, as it was his poor result in that session which set him up for failure in the races this weekend.
