F3 Driver Ratings: No points for Tuukka Taponen in shortened Australia GP Sprint Race

Tuukka Taponen started the F3 Australian GP Sprint Race in 14th, but managed to work his way up the grid in a chaotic race.

The opening Formula 3 Sprint Race of the 2026 season didn’t disappoint, with the Australian Grand Prix providing plenty of entertainment. Bruno Del Pino came out on top, with Enzo Deligny finishing second and Brando Badoer claiming the final spot on the podium. However, Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy prospect, Tuukka Taponen, also had a busy race in Melbourne. The Finnish driver came home in 13th, with the young driver doing well to avoid the chaos during the opening stages of the contest. However, with the race being finished early because of a red flag, Taponen had no chance of claiming points during the sprint race.

Tuukka Taponen’s F3 Melbourne Sprint Race Results

  • Session Result: 13th
  • Gap to P1: +13.6
  • Key Highlight: Kept the car clean and maintained a consistent pace.
  • Weekend Prospects: Tuukka Taponen has work to do in the Feature Race, but there is still a strong chance of the Finnish driver claiming his first points of the 2026 F3 season.

Tuukka Taponen: 5/10 - Could Have Done Better, But Kept It Clean

Although Tuukka Taponen didn’t score points during the Formula 3 Sprint Race in Melbourne, he was slightly unlucky because of the red flag caused by the two Prema drivers. Before the race was stopped, Taponen was in 11th overall, and seemed to have the pace to stick with ‌Nicola Lacorte in the final points-paying position. However, you win some and lose some in racing, and if the Finnish driver had a better qualifying session yesterday, he might have already been in a points-scoring position when the race was red flagged.

I have rated Tuukka Taponen’s performance during the F3 Australia Sprint Race a 5/10. This is mainly because of his consistent pace compared to Theophile Nael, who is the pole sitter in the Feature Race. Taponen was catching the Frenchman during the halfway point of the race, but he was helped by Nael’s battle with Lacorte. He didn’t get involved in many wheel-to-wheel battles, and he barely made an on-track overtake, but the fact that he kept the car clean in such a chaotic race deserved some credit.

Tuukka Taponen vs MP Motorsport: Is Taponen Beating His F3 Teammates?

Tuukka Taponen’s MP Motorsport teammate Mattia Colnaghi had the biggest advantage heading into the Sprint Race, starting 7th on the grid in Melbourne. His other teammate, Alessandro Giusti started 16th. However, Taponen finished ahead of both his MP Motorsport rivals, with Colnaghi spinning-out early in the race and Giusti lacking the pace around Albert Park all weekend. I don’t believe the Finnish Ferrari prospect would have beaten Colnaghi if it wasn’t for his spin, so it’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top in the Feature Race. In the end, Giusti finished way down the order in 21st, while Colnaghi was at the rear of the field because of the race ending early.
