Why The F3 Australian GP Is Tuukka Taponen's Ferrari Turning Point
All eyes are on the 2026 F1 season opener, but Tuukka Taponen’s F3 Melbourne GP is the start of a season-long story.
While the mainstream fans are watching the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, Tuukka Taponen will quietly be handling business in Formula 3. If you’re a Ferrari supporter, like me, then Taponen’s first outing in the 2026 F3 season will produce plenty of excitement and lay the foundation for an important year. The Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy supports the Finnish driver, meaning he might one day compete in F1 for the Prancing Horse.
However, at the moment, Tuukka Taponen first needs to dominate Formula 3 before stepping up the Ferrari Driver Academy ladder. Taponen is entering his second full season in F3 at the Melbourne GP, with last season laying a solid foundation for the 19-year-old to build on. If Taponen can impress this season, you’d have to assume that the FDA will promote the youngster to Formula 2, alongside Dino Beganovic and Rafael Camara.
Can Tuukka Taponen Join The Formula 2 Battle Next Season?
As Ferrari fans, we have plenty to look forward to this Formula 3 season. Tuukka Taponen has put himself in a prime position to dominate the F3 standings, moving to one of the top teams, MP Motorsport, for the 2026 season. Last year, Taponen raced for ART Grand Prix, who finished fourth in the team standings, while MP Motorsport secured third overall. This is only a small step up, but given the Finn already got three podiums in his first full F3 season last year, we can expect much more silverware in 2026.
Tuukka Taponen officially made his Formula 3 debut in 2024, racing twice for ART Grand Prix. However, the 19-year-old competed in 19 races last season, getting three podiums and 67 points. I very much expect Taponen to secure his first F3 win this season, and that’s likely an expectation from the Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy. Speaking of the FDA, promoting successful F3 drivers to Formula 2 is commonplace for the Scuderia, with Rafael Camara making the leap to F2 this season. Meaning, if the Finnish driver can win the F3 Drivers’ Championship, or at least come close, then it’s highly likely he’ll get promoted to F2 in 2027.
The Formula 2 battle between Dino Beganovic and Rafael Camara is going to be thrilling this season, with both drivers vying for a spot in Formula 1. Camara is the current Formula 3 Drivers’ Champion, showing a clear path for Tuukka Taponen to follow if he can have a successful F3 season this year. Beganovic never won the F3 title, with his highest finish being sixth in the F3 standings. So Taponen doesn’t have to win the championship to get promoted, but he will need to win some races. But one thing's for certain, if we had a three-way battle between our Ferrari Driver Academy prospects in Formula 2 next season, that would be an incredible storyline to follow!
